Technobyte: Find out how your sweat could be used to power your device

The Mediabox is an innovative new device that completely eclipses any media hub you have heard about in the past.

Mediabox will allow you the freedom to choose who you use to get your pay TV content. It is SA’s first integrated system that includes the most popular local and international premium content, including access to DSTV, Supersport, Showmax, Netflix & Amazon right out of the box and so doesn’t require a SmartTV to manage VOD services.

Just like Apple TV and Roku, set up is easy and seamless, so people can gain access to their streaming services quickly. Mediabox is designed for the local market, so the software is compatible with SA networks.

Samsung is making preparations to launch its most expensive cell phone yet, telling partners that its Galaxy Note8 will retail for €999. The 6.3-inch device, with the same edge-to-edge, 18.5:9 aspect ratio AMOLED display as in the Galaxy S8 lineup, will be unveiled in the second half of September.

At nearly the same size as the 6.2-inch Galaxy S8+, for the first time in its seven-year history, Samsung is counting on more than an expansive screen to differentiate the Note line from the S-series.

It aims to achieve that differentiation with selectively beefed-up components and a dual main camera setup, along with the line’s signature feature, the S Pen stylus.

Battery flat on your radio? Don’t sweat it. Or maybe that’s exactly what you should do. Sweat alone has been used to power a radio for two days, demonstrating the capability of a new skin patch.

The patch is a flexible square just a couple of centimetres across that sticks to skin.

It contains enzymes that replace the precious metals normally used in batteries and feed off sweat to provide power. Getting enough power out of a biofuel cell to make it useful has proved tricky, but the latest version can extract 10 times more than before.

They used the lactate found in sweat to power their particular biofuel cell. The amount of lactate or lactic acid in sweat is also related to how efficiently a person’s muscles are working, so could help give readings on an athlete’s performance during exercise.

Similarly, levels of glucose in sweat are related to its concentration in the blood. Biofuel cells could, therefore, provide a way to monitor glucose levels in people with diabetes, without the need for needles and blood samples.
