Claims that Russian government attempted to hack British parliament

The Russian government is believed to be responsible for a cyber-attack on the British parliament that breached email accounts belonging to MPs.

Nearly 90 email accounts belonging to parliamentarians are believed to have been hacked.

Although the investigation is still in its early stages, security services believe that the attack was most likely initiated by a government.

It is very difficult to actually get the evidence, they just do not suspect that this is a group of disenfranchised teenagers or a group of hackers who just simply want to cause an issue.

Gavin Gray, UK correspondent

It is being looked at by various authorities in the UK and they believe either Russia, possibly North Korea are behind it but exactly how you prove it was state sponsored is very difficult.

Gavin Gray, UK correspondent

The reason we feel 90 email accounts were hacked is because those 90 had weak passwords.
