Gender violence in the Spotlight

Justice Department launches programme to tackle intimate femicide

South Africa has been marred with increased reports and shocking figures of gender based violence since the beginning of 2017.

The Department of Justice launched a national programme for a dialogue on intimate femicide, in Durban on Friday. The programme intends to change the way cases dealing with violence against women are handled.

Father Smangaliso Mkhatshwa, Chairperson of the Moral Regeneration Movement, co-hosted and attended the programme. Mkhatshwa says, like all South Africans, his organisation is concerned with the swelling number of gender-based violence reports.

Our mandate is to try and tackle all issues that violate moral and ethical values.

Mkhatshwa says at the event, attendees committed themselves to taking some sort of action towards curbing violence against women and children as well as challenging oppressive patriarchal systems.

He explains that educating whilst listening to people say is important when tackling gender-based violence.

They would need to work alongside, young people, women, and research institutions to find feasible and possible solutions to ending violence towards women and children, he admits.

We also need to send a strong message to the perpetrators that they can run but they cannot hide forever because this cannot be allowed to continue.
