"Parliament is full of old people with old ideas"

Sikhulekile ‘Khule’ Duma is a 22-year old researcher involved in the Betrayal of the Promise report into state capture.

As a young South African, he has fresh insights into how young people feel about the country and the current political conjuncture.

He chats to CapeTalk's John Maytham about the concerns of the younger generation.

he says there is a lot of ageism in Parliament and younger MPs are not taken seriously.

He sways that's why young people don't feel they can engage with the system.

He says young people are searching for other avenues to make their voices heard on campuses or on the streets.

We still trying to figure out what this new politics is going to look like.

He himself was a student activist and reminds us that this recent student movement is only a few years old.

And the question of redressing the apartheid past and the failures of the current government?

He says one of the biggest growths within himself personally over the past few years has been that of nuance.

Understanding that not everything is black and white, most things are grey. And I think when you look at South Africa today, you understand that things are indeed grey.

Duma will be part of a panel discussion on these burning issues this evening at UCT at 18:00 Lecture Theatre KLT 1 Kramer Law Building, Middle Campus.
