Kgosana admits to emailing Atul Gupta, says he did nothing wrong

Former non-executive director of Alexander Forbes, Moses Kgosana says he voluntarily stepped down from the position because of public criticism directed at the company over his email correspondence with Atul Gupta.

Last week amaBhungane revealed that KPMG, Gupta-owned Linkway’s auditors, were well aware of many of the key details surrounding the Guptas’ Sun City wedding .

It also revealed that companies were categorising the wedding costs as business expenses, which meant they could be deducted for tax purposes.

The leaked emails which reveal that the Free State provincial government largely picked up the tab, include an email from by the then-chief executive, Kgosana, describing the wedding as the “event of the millennium”.

Kgosana admits the email is authentic and says there was no wrong doing.

As a CEO of an audit firm, one of your roles is to have a relationship with all of your clients, not all but probably top 20 clients. I received an invitation together with my colleagues, I accepted and attended. Therefore writing to them, that could have been an email I sent to the CEO of Standard Bank, Nedbank.... It is a professional relationship and that is all it was.

When we get client events, we pay for ourselves for independent reasons. People can look at the bill for Sun City, they can see that every KPMG invitee paid for themselves.

I stepped down, I resigned, I wasn't pushed...but because of this media publicity, there was already public opinion attacking Alexander Forbes saying you have given a corrupt person the chairmanship role. I thought it was unfair to Alexander Forbes so I needed to step out of that role so that the focus is not on Alexander Forbes, I can have an opportunity to clear my name.

It is not an admittance of wrong doing. I did not do anything wrong.
