Education Department considers dropping Maths as a compulsory subject

The Basic Education Department is considering removing Mathematics as a compulsory requirement for promotion in grades 7, 8 and 9.

Florence Modipa, Chief Education Specialist, Department of Basic Education says this amendment will look into helping learners who do not wish to pursue mathematics until grade 12. In addition, the department is also considering reducing the pass mark for languages.

The proposal further suggests learners can obtain a pass mark of 40% instead of 50% for home language in these grades.

Currently the status is that learners in the lower grade need to pass two languages for each grade in order to proceeded.
