Removing maths as a compulsory subject is a huge risk - Mathematician

Mathematics has caused many a learner headaches at school.

But now, the Department of Basic Education has started a process of consultation on proposed amendments to pass requirements for pupils in grades 1 to 9, which would see mathematics removed as a compulsory pass requirement.

David Holgate, Head of the Department of Mathematics and Applied Mathematics, University of the Western Cape (UWC) says schools and the department of education should rather aim for quality passes so that people can see the opportunities that come with mathematics.

Maths is so fundamental. You can't critique the newspaper or even laugh at a Donald Trump quote if you don't have a good understanding of maths.

David Holgate, Head of the Department of Mathematics and Applied Mathematics, UWC

Saying learners can get by without mathematics is pulling the rug from under their feet says Holgate. He further explains that is it is vital to invest in teachers who will teach the subject.

Holgate would rather have the focus shift towards producing and exposing learners to quality mathematics rather than marks.
