On Monday, The John Maytham show, hosted by Africa Melane on CapeTalk took a call from a very concerned citizen who alerted listeners to a couple going about the Muizenberg catwalk area, targeting vulnerable tourists.
According to reports, the assailants assault victims with a hammer, before robbing them. The station has reported on three attacks on tourists, in January, February and last month. Those living in the area say this is nothing new and that there are known groups of robbers who plague the area.
Trevor Schneider who is part of the Muizenberg Neighbourhood Watch says he sympathises with the victims of the attacks which he describes as brutal and cowardly.
Schneider explains that because the incidents are rarely reported to the police it is difficult for them to make arrests. He goes on to say that in a recent incident, the police managed to nab the attackers involved within an hour.
We are monitoring that area on a regular basis.— Trevor Schneider, Muizenberg Neighbourhood Watch
The walkway is difficult to monitor and observe effectively, its a very long and convoluted route.— Trevor Schneider, Muizenberg Neighbourhood Watch
We've talked about having cameras along the route says Schneider. On the back of that, Schneider adds that they will need a rapid response team.
