Pensioners can apply for lifeline tariffs irrespective of their property value

The new electricity tariff structure for the City of Cape Town came into effect on 1 July.

The tariffs increased by less than the inflation rate. They went up by 2.81%, from 164.51c/kWh to 169.12c/kWh and from 200.05c/kWh to 205.65c/kWh for domestic users.

There were concerns raised about the pensioners who will be affected by these new changes.

Mayco member for finance at City of Cape Town, Johan van der Merwe says the pensioners will still be able to apply for the lifeline tariffs irrespective of their property value provided their monthly consumption is less than 450kWh

The tariffs are primarily based on consumptive charge and the incentive remains for all users to reduce their consumption.
