Civil society conference to focus on #GuptaLeaks, tackling state capture

The Ahmed Kathrada Foundation and Save South Africa (SaveSA) have announced plans to host a civil society conference aimed at tackling corruption as well as state capture.

The Conference for the Future of South Africa will take place on July 18, the birthday of struggle stalwart Nelson Mandela.

The Ahmed Kathrada Foundation's executive director Neeshan Balton says the conference is in an effort to bring coordination and national impact to the fight against state capture.

Other organisations expected to attend include OUTA and Section27.

Balton explains that the conference will see a collaboration between research groups, academia, business formations, faith-based institutions, labour and trade union movements.

We see this as a gathering of the widest spectrum of civil society.

He says the conference will discuss state capture, the leaked Gupta emails, independent judicial commission of inquiry into state capture and other mechanisms to root out corruption.

Balton reflected Bell Potinger's apology for working with Gupta-owned Oakbay Investments, the Black First Land First (BLF) groups recent controversial behaviour and claims that they represent the voice of black South Africans.

He also explored how state capture affects South Africans on a daily basis.
