10 police stations in the highest crime areas have been identified by the City of Cape Town.
The City will start training the first batch of recruits for its Neighbourhood Safety Teams Initiative later in the month of July to be deployed in these areas and help to radically reduce crime.
Mayco Member for Safety and Security JP Smith says with the right mix of solutions they will be able to get these crimes infested areas off the top ten soon.
With these interventions we can move these areas off the top and keep them off and allow them a chance to normalise and get businesses to develop and the community to get involved in programmes that aren't overrun by crime.— JP Smith, Mayco Member for Safety and Security
Smith says the City has R20 million budget approved for recruitment, training, and deployment of law enforcement staff in the affected areas.
He says a similar approach has been used in the Mannenburg area and it has proved to be working. Some 120 personnel are deployed to help decrease the crime in the area daily.
