"Traditional leader referring to Ramaphosa as 'president' is significant moment"

News over the weekend revealed that deputy president, Cyril Ramaphosa spent some time in the Eastern Cape and was warmly welcomed by traditional leaders in the area.

One report says that Prince Zolile Burns-Ncamashe referred to Ramaphosa at the meeting as President.

Professor, Mcebisi Ndletyana, associate professor of political science at UJ says what the traditional leader said to Ramaphosa marks a significant moment.

Ordinarily Ramaphosa would be not be associated with the chief as he is perceived as an urban-based politician.

Because we are headed towards the ANC's elective conference, I think its quite smart of Cyril Ramaphosa to cover all the bases because the idea is to mobilise abroad as far as possible.

The Congress of Traditional Leaders of South Africa (Contralesa) has been frustrated with the ANC, says Ndletyana.

Ndletyana says it is yet unclear how much damage the Bell Pottinger campaign has caused in South Africa.

They have added a little bit of heat in our rhetoric.

He says we cannot deny the issues such as race brought up in the PR firm's campaign.

One always hears the African National Congress (ANC) and The Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF) talking against racism but one hardly hears respected white leaders in our society speaking out against racism as forcefully as they do against other issues, says Ndletyana.
