WATCH: Fees Commission report 'delay tactic', says Prof Jansen on varsity crisis

Former Free State University vice-chancellor Professor Jonathan Jansen says government's Fees Commission is nothing more than a delay tactic and will not help.

WATCH: Fees Commission report 'delay tactic', says Prof Jansen on university crisis

Jansen spoke about his new book, "As By Fire - The end of the South African University", which explores student activism, the Fees Must Fall (FMF) campaign and the university crisis.

It’s a chilling read about the collapse of our institutions of higher learning and the devastating effects of the FMF protests.

Jansen says the book is warning about what could happen to the public higher education system in South Africa, if the system doesn't change course.

He says free higher education should only be given to the poor and should be clearly outlined by all stakeholders.

Jansen emphasised the importance of plural voices and acknowledged the importance of universities in South Africa.

We need to affirm the value of universities.. The university is not something separate from or above the din of everyday South Africa.

Prof. Jonathan Jansen, author and former Free State University vice-chancellor

We need to recognise that without universities, we don't really have a vibrant democracy.

Jansen says parents and the public can support students on the issues, but condemn the destruction of institutions.

You can't burn on a Friday what you will need on a Monday.

He also slammed the calls for maths to be removed as a compulsory pass requirement and says South African will pay a heavy price if the move is executed.

I think the Basic Education Department is mad, and is sinking to the lowest common denominator. They are trying to make themselves look good politically.

Prof Jansen has encouraged parents to fight for the rights of their child's education and says government should respond to evidence and not politics.
