Mbalula to 'reshuffle' airport security to combat crime, corruption at OR Tambo

Police Minister Fikile Mbalula says he plans to redeploy airport officials and security personnel in order to curb airport crimes.

Mbalula visited OR Tambo International Airport on Monday morning to assess security at the national key point, reports EWN's Gia Nicolaides.

The minister says many of the crimes committed at OR Tambo are inside jobs, adding that and police and security officials often accept bribes.

Mbalula says there has been a lapse in security. He is going to reshuffle offices and security guards based at the airport.

Mbalula says police do not have any statistics on the spate of airport followings, where criminals target tourists, businessmen and even locals leaving OR Tambo airport.

He has vowed to bring in an armed, tactical response team that will "outgun" airport criminals.

The Airports Company of South Africa Limited (ACSA) says there appear to be international "spotters" who also receive information from abroad in cases of airport followings.
