Do Cape Town's inner city buildings meet fire safety standards?

CapeTalk's Kieno Kammies speaks to Alderman JP Smith, Mayco member for safety and security, about the safety standards of buildings in Cape Town.

Last week seven people were reported dead as a result of a fire which engulfed the Cape York Building in Johannesburg.

Last month, 27 floors of Grenfell Tower in the UK burnt to ashes killing 12 residents.

According to Smith, the buildings in Cape Town's inner city have had a significant amount of rejuvenation in recent years making them safer.

This means they are rebuilt at at time when new regulations and safety standards apply.

Smith says the are trying to get some of the older buildings to comply with the standards after renovations.

Buildings not deemed safe as they don't comply with safety regulations and pose a risk, have been shut down.

The City conducts annual fire safety inspections to check if the buildings comply with building and fire regulations.

As soon as they are modified or renovated then the regulations kick in and they have to be compliant.

JP Smith, Mayco Member for Safety and Security

We are lucky in that we have seen quite a significant number of re-investment in the City and that many of our buildings have been made compliant.
