How accurate (or off the mark) stock pickers on The Money Show have been in 2017

Both stocks I punted have gone sideways.

Nadir Thokan, 27 Four Investments

Mediclinic hasn’t done too much.

Gary Booysen, Rand Swiss

Woolworths is probably the worst of the stock picks.

Gary Booysen, Rand Swiss

AVI really does show its quality. They always under-promise and over-deliver.

Caroline Cremen, Adviceworx

A stock pick is when, for example, a fund manager systematically analyses the stock market to conclude that a certain share will make a good investment and, therefore, should be added to her portfolio.

Stock picking is difficult.

There is no fool-proof way of predicting the movement of share prices.

However, stock picking is not merely guesswork.

In January this year, The Money Show’s Bruce Whitfield asked the following three investment analysts for their stock picks for the year:

  • Caroline Cremen (Portfolio Manager at Adviceworx, a member of Old Mutual Group)

  • Gary Booysen (Director at Rand Swiss)

  • Nadir Thokan (Investment Analyst at 27 Four Investments)

Now, more than halfway through the year, Whitfield grills them on the performance of their picks.

Listen to the interview in the audio below (and/or scroll down for more quotes from it).

Standard Bank is still enjoying very healthy margins.

Nadir Thokan, 27 Four Investments

More than 50% of Standard Bank shares are held by foreigners.

Nadir Thokan, 27 Four Investments

With a 5.5% dividend yield you’re being paid to hold Standard Bank shares.

Nadir Thokan, 27 Four Investments

Steinhoff is a long-term buy.

Nadir Thokan, 27 Four Investments

The UK and USA constitute more than 50% of Steinhoff’s earnings.

Nadir Thokan, 27 Four Investments

Pepkor still achieves strong earnings growth.

Nadir Thokan, 27 Four Investments

Steinhoff trades at a discount.

Nadir Thokan, 27 Four Investments

We’ve seen a resolution on all three issues [holding the share price back].

Gary Booysen, Rand Swiss

Mediclinic is investing for the future.

Gary Booysen, Rand Swiss

Woolworths is very well run.

Gary Booysen, Rand Swiss

Woolworths has significant upside. It’s cheap.

Gary Booysen, Rand Swiss

Old Mutual is worth holding. Unfortunately it’s down from where we picked it.

Caroline Cremen, Adviceworx

There will be enormous cost savings [from Old Mutual’s unbundling].

Caroline Cremen, Adviceworx

Old Mutual has given me so much pain and grief; I’m sticking with it!

Caroline Cremen, Adviceworx

I would not be in Old Mutual if it wasn’t for the unbundling.
