Zuma cannot retain control of state capture inquiry - Mkhwebane

Public Protector Busisiwe Mkhwebane filed an affidavit with the Pretoria High Court on Tuesday in which she directly takes on President Jacob Zuma with regards to the state capture inquiry.

According to EWN Reporter Barry Bateman, Mkhwebane said that it is impermissible for the President to retain control of the inquiry because he is implicated in the allegations to be investigated by the commission.

Former Public Protector Thuli Madonsela made recommendation in her State of Capture report that the Chief Justice should appoint a judge to chair a commission of inquiry into allegations of state capture.

Mkhwebane went into further details on how Zuma has financial and personal interests in the resolution of these allegations.

She says that all seven issues concerning the alleged breach of ethics Act identify that there is relevance for investigation as the President in directly implicated in all seven of those breaches.

President Jacob Zuma asked the High Court to set aside Madonsela’s recommendations in her state capture report in 2016.

Another thing she says is that the inquiry needs to be set up with haste, saying that the state capture allegations that are emerging everyday in South Africa must be tested as a matter of urgency as it undermines the public interest.
