"The music lives on" - tributes pour in for legend Ray Phiri

Tributes have been pouring in for the late Ray Phiri.

The legendary musician passed away early on Wednesday morning after a battle with lung cancer.

He was also the founding member of the Cannibals in the 1970s.

Many have described his passing as a great loss to the music industry and the country.

Writer and jazz critic Victor Dlamini says Phiri's music was popular but also politically conscious.

He compared Phiri to the likes of music icon Marvin Gaye and says Phiri's music will always live on.

When we listen to "Whispers in the Deep" or "People Don't Talk", there is joy and there is something else. You are free.

Phiri has been recognised for his contribution to the music industry and the fight against apartheid.

At the same time, artists and broadcaster Proverb says Phiri left a mark on the world and in our hearts.

Proverb remembered working Phiri and says the music legend taught him humility and compassion.

Ivor Harburger, the former CEO of Gallo Music, also reflected on making many hits with Phiri back in the 1970s.
