SABC interim board to axe Hlaudi's controversial editorial policy

In Auckland park, Johannesburg, the interim South African Broadcasting Corporation (SABC) board is expected to unveil the corporation’s new editorial policy to replace the policy that was instituted by its former COO, Hlaudi Motsoneng, who believed that seventy percent of the news broadcast on the corporation should be quote 'good news'.

Veteran journalist and broadcaster, Professor Anton Harber says compiling a policy should begin within existing policies.

There was a pretty comprehensive process of drawing up an editorial policy some years back that went through a long consultative process. It was imperfect but it was a good solid foundation for a public service broadcaster.

Professor Anton Harber, veteran journalist

Harber suspects the interim SABC board will discard what he calls the distorted policy and revert to older policy.

News editors must make news decision, those decisions must be free from political and financial influence as possible says Harber.

He goes on to say that news editors should be empowered to make editorial decisions. He also cautions against CEOs meddling with editorial decisions and newsrooms in a manner that will jeopardise editorial independence.
