The provision of contraceptives and sexual education is not enough to eradicate child abandonment in South Africa, says children's sanctuary Door of Hope.
This comes after two babies were found dumped in rubbish bins this week in Fourways, Gauteng this week.
The Gauteng Department of Social Development claims there is 'no justification whatsoever' for abandoning babies, citing government's provision of education and contraceptives.
However, Door of Hope's Nadene Grabham says there are many, complex challenges faced by desperate women with unwanted pregnancies.
To provide condoms and education is not going to solve the issue of child abandonment in South Africa.— Nadene Grabham, Operations Director at Door of Hope
Grabham differentiated between safe child abandonment at local organisations such as theirs and child abandonment that results in an infant's death.
