This Friday, Chris Smith, also known as The Naked Scientist, unpacked two big pay off studies conducted on coffee and mortality.
For a long while, coffee has been said to be bad for you says Smith.
According to Smith, the studies were independently conducted and published in the Annals if Internal Medicine. Together they considered nearly 700 000 people in both Europe and the US followed up over an impressive average of 16 years.
If you drink coffee your mortality rate appears to be lower and there appears to be a dose dependent relationship.— Chris Smith, The Naked Scientist
So if you have one coffee, according to the US data then your mortality rate at any given age drops by about 12%. If you drink three or more cups of coffee everyday your mortality rate drops by 18%.— Chris Smith, The Naked Scientist
Chris adamantly says that the study is observational and should be treated with caution. He adds that while the study is interesting, it does require further investigation.

Hippos are very much mammals says Smith. He explains that the closest, living relative of a hippo is, believe it or not, the whale.
He says hippos do spend an enormous amount of time in the water but they are mammalian, air breathing, have lungs and pretty darn good at holding their breath - but not as good as crocodiles.
