Lives of national and provisional leaders are at stake - political analyst

On Thursday evening, the former African National Congress Youth League (ANCYL) secretary general was shot eleven times in an apparent political attack.

While in Tshwane, the Democratic Alliance has pointed fingers at the ANC, accusing it sparking violence in the Soshanguve area.

Lukhona Mnguni, political analyst based at UKZN explains the dynamics at play to The Midday Report's Stephen Grootes.

There is an upcoming regional conference in the Harry Gwala region. One of the front runners of the ANC December conference, Nkosazana Dlamini-Zuma comes from Harry Gwala. That region is highly contested.

Mnguni says also it is important to note that there are prevalent domestic issues involving corruption in that particular region.

President Jacob Zuma issued a proclamation in December 2016 to investigate the corruption there he reminds Grootes.

Mnguni says because serious people have been implicated, this may have spilled over into the ongoing violence.

The lives of the national and provisional leaders are at stake. Majority of the senior leaders in the KZN region are guarded by heavy security.

Zweli Mkhize is not the most uniting figure in the ANC

Mnguni says some people are not fond of him and has fallen out of way with some colleagues within the party.

He says having Dr. Zweli Mkhize, treasury general of the ANC, put up as a midway candidate is similar to President Jacob Zuma's proposal at the close of the ANC national policy to have the losing presidential candidate become the deputy president of the party automatically.
