People in South Africa and across world have been commemorating the legacy of struggle icon Nelson Mandela.
Several Mandela Day activities and initiatives are underway nationwide and abroad.
In Cape Town, they include:
- The Walk Together campaign hosted by The Elders
Members of The Elders organisation, including Graca Machel, former Ireland president Mary Robinson, Sir Richard Branson, invited Capetonians to walk for change through the CBD.
- Desmond and Leah Tutu Legacy Foundation Soup Drive
Staff from the Desmond and Leah Tutu Legacy Foundation are also at the Grand Parade to hand out soup to those who need a warm meal.
The foundation's Rizaan Bailey explains that sou[p was handed out across the CBD.
- Community Chest Book Wall
The Community Chest CEO, Lorenzo Davids, is calling on people to head down to 82 Bree Street and donate 67 books to help build a book mountain to champion Mandela's call for education.
