W Cape hard-hitting video will make you think twice before driving and texting

Do you text and drive?

A Western Cape government video shows a CCTV footage of people who are walking and texting, bumping into objects and falling.

The question is asked if you can't walk and text, what makes you think you can text and drive, # ItCanWait.

This new video by Safely Home, a road safety initiative of the Western Cape Government's Department of Transport and Public Works, has been viewed over 200 000 times on their own portal.

Strategic Coordinator of Safely Home, Hector Eliot says the promotion has gathered a lot of interest.

It has really exploded across the world and on numerous Facebook pages and news sites.

Eliot says it is not clear at the moment whether the video has had an impact on motorists.

He says in South Africa it is easier to tell if an accident was caused by drunk driving, but a lot harder to know if it was due to texting while driving.

We survey the public every year through the Safe Home survey. We do the field work in November and release the results in March the following year. Through that we should be able to detect if it is making an impact...
