KZN ANC councillors intimidated groups in housing disputes hears commission

The Moerane Commission has heard how some members of the shack dwellers movement Abahlali baseMjondolo have been intimidated, attacked and killed amid disputes over corrupt practices in the allocation of houses in Kwazulu-Natal.

Abahlali leader Sibusiso Zikode has told the commission of killings which go as far back as 2013.

In March 2013, a well known and respected housing activist, Nkululeko Gwala was murdered in Cato Crest. Later that year, 17-year-old Nqobile Nzuza was shot in the back by police during a housing protest.

Zikode also shared how the movement sought assistance from an international human rights organisation for protection in 2009, when members of the African National Congress attacked his family and other high ranking leaders of the organisation.

Eyewitness News reporter, Ziyanda Ngcobo has more on developments at the commission.

We have heard some harrowing testimonies from their leader, Sibusiso Zikode who shared how their members have either been intimidated, harassed or killed by authorities or local ANC councillors because they have been speaking out on corruption regarding the allocation of houses by the eThekwini Municipality.
