[LISTEN] Eskom uncertain as to who instructed R500m payment to Trillian

Many questions have arisen following Eskom's admission that they paid Gupta-linked consultancy firm Trillian R500 million for work done. Interim board chairperson at Eskom, Zethembe Khoza says an inquiry has been set up to investigate this further.

Despite not having a contract with Trillian, Eskom was apparently instructed to pay the firm R500 million through global consultant firm McKinsey. Mckinsey denies telling Eskom to pay this money.

We had a contract with McKinsey and not Trillian. Trillian was sub-contracted to McKinsey and we were informed that McKinsey requested us to pay Trillian directly.

Zethembe Khoza, Interim Board Chairperson at Eskom

Khosa says the inquiry will clarify these issues and then they can be made public.

The R500 million payment to Trillian is not the only interaction that the Eskom board is uncertain of. On Wednesda, Eskom Chief Financial Officer Anoj Singh admitted that he signed a R1.6 billion guarantee by the company for Tegeta Resources to pay for the Optimum Mine.

I don't remember approving such a figure [R1.6 billion] for Tegeta.

Zethembe Khoza, Interim Board Chairperson at Eskom

Khoza says he needs time to look at this and establish the facts before action can be taken.
