30% of South Africa's local agricultural produce goes to waste
According to a study done by the Council for Scientific and Industrial Research (CSIR), in South Africa, over 9 million tonnes of food goes to waste every year.
Principal scientist at the CSIR, Prof Linda Godfrey, says this means around 30% of SA's local agricultural produce grown is never consumed.
She says this issue needs to be addressed because it doesn't make sense that millions of people go hungry every day yet food is being thrown away.
We have to find smarter ways of producing food and minimising waste.Prof Linda Godfrey, Principal scientist at the CSIR
We cannot afford to continue with this way of producing food. We have to look at the entire supply chain, the way we grow food, the packaging, the way we transport food ...Prof Linda Godfrey, Principal scientist at the CSIR
She says all these steps in the chain can lead to food wastage.
