According to a study done by the Council for Scientific and Industrial Research (CSIR), in South Africa, over 9 million tonnes of food goes to waste every year.
Principal scientist at the CSIR, Prof Linda Godfrey, says this means around 30% of SA's local agricultural produce grown is never consumed.
She says this issue needs to be addressed because it doesn't make sense that millions of people go hungry every day yet food is being thrown away.
