Lesotho Highland Water Project
Julius Kleynhans says Gauteng was supposed to receive water from this project next year it looks like it will only happen in 2025.

The Organisation Undoing Tax Abuse (Outa) is accusing the Department of Water and Sanitation of serious maladministration arising from the Lesotho Highland Water Project Phase Two (LHWP II).

The organisation is threatening to take legal actions against the department following the delay of this major water project.

Outa spokesperson, Julius Kleynhans, says the project was running well under Dr Zodwa Dlamini who has ten years of experience in water mega-projects and was removed from the project by Water Affairs and Sanitation Minister Nomvula Mokonyane without any reason.

When the minister came to power she stopped the process, she tried to delay the procurement process to get her preferred consultants involved and unfortunately today we see there is no real progress.

Julius Kleynhans, Outa spokesperson

Kleynhans says Gauteng was supposed to receive water from this projects next year in 2018 but now it looks like that would only happen in 2025.

Outa has called for the reinstatement of the technical sub-committee as well as the board, but Kleynhans says there has been no progress on that.

We're falling far behind and every day the clock is ticking. We have seen water constraints in Gauteng in general.

Julius Kleynhans, Outa spokesperson

We cannot help but to emphasise that we need this minister to be held accountable. She is the custodian and regulator of water in the country and they need to make sure that people have sufficient water.

Julius Kleynhans, Outa spokesperson
