Parliament holds preliminary hearing to gather information for Eskom probe

Before the leaked Gupta emails came to light, the Public Enterprises Committee of Parliament decided to look more closely at Brian Molefe's reappointment as Eskom's chief executive officer.

EWN parliamentary reporter Gaye Davis says that the revelations contained in the Gupta Leaks caused the committee decide to look at the matter more broadly. She adds that today's proceedings are a preliminary hearing to gather background information from various sources.

Academics produced a report that looked at state capture as a phenomenon and came to the conclusion that we are essentially heading toward a mafia state.

There are questions about what is expected to come out of the inquiry and how effective it will be.

According to Davis, the chair has stated the this is a very complex issue, with sensitivities and they don't want to leave any stone unturned.
