Retrenchment is a painful reality in South Africa which can have devastating financial and psychological effects.
There are huge challenges with finances.. but it's the emotional problem that is the more hidden and difficult problem for people to move forward.— Brain Blem, Counselling Psychologist at Lighthouse Therapy Centre
Counselling psychologist Brain Blem says retrenchment can illicit feelings of shame, rejection and betrayal.
Blem explains that retrenchment can also trigger a negative self-image that can take people to "a dark place", as testified by a caller.
He says retrenched individuals need to develop supportive relationships and support groups to help build resilience and fight stigma.
