[LISTEN] Gigaba supports Singh suspension, says corruption must be rooted out

Finance Minister Malusi Gigaba says he fully supports and welcomes a decision taken by the Board of Directors at Eskom to put chief financial officer, Anoj Singh on special leave.

He says he had several meetings with the Minister of Public Enterprise, Lynne Brown as well as the Board of Eskom and he is happy that the board is finally acting.

According to reports, Singh has been linked to the controversial Gupta family but Gigaba says these engagements are related to the recent audit findings.

He says it is important for the Parliamentary Portfolio Committee on Public Enterprises to dig deeper into establishing the depth of these problems with the SOEs "so that the truth can finally come out".

The issues that are under consideration at the moment relate to the audit findings of the past financial year when I was no longer in Public enterprising.

Malusi Gigaba, Finance Minister

But if there are issues that go back, they (Portfolio Committee) need to go back. To the best of my knowledge there were no issues when I was in public enterprise... We all must be steadfast against corruption.

Malusi Gigaba, Finance Minister

Gigaba says the allegations that are emerging from the Guptas leaked emails are quite damaging to investor perception and facts need to established as to who are complicit in these matters.

That's why I've been unequivocal in insisting that we need to act with urgency to improve the governance of our state owned entities to ensure that there is a clear governance model...

Malusi Gigaba, Finance Minister

Kyle Cowan, Investigative journalist for Times Media says the political will in South African politics is currently shifting.

We are starting to see a little bit of change in narrative from our top politicians. The penny has finally dropped and people are realising there are consequences to these things.

Kyle Cowan, Investigative journalist for Times Media

Although Singh was not the only person implicated in the Gupta leaks, he held a powerful position. He made deals, signed contracts, discussing loans and pulled the power strings, says Cowan.

Singh was appointed by the then Minister of Public Enterpise, Malusi Gigaba.

Cowan says the concerns around Finance Minister stems from these appointments and that certain deals were made to benefit the Gupta family and Singh has been in the middle of all this.
