Friday Profile: Nelson Mandela Foundation's Sello Hatang

Sello Hatang is the chief executive officer of the Nelson Mandela Foundation a job he's been doing for four years.

Hatang says it is a job, he holds dear and considers himself lucky to have it. He says at the time the board appointed him to the position he was only thirty-seven years old and had people questioning whether or not he was too young to run the organisation.

Hatang is also an archivist, carrying the role of accurately portraying South Africa's history.

History can be used at times to whip people with, it can also be burdensome. It can be something so static that people don't always appreciate.

Sello Hatang, CEO Nelson Mandela Foundation

Hatang explains that history and archives can be used as tools of empowerment and not oppression, especially for the younger generation.

He was the first in his family to qualify and study at a university. He is the fifth of six children.

The Catholic Church was the first to give me my big break says Hatang. He adds that his grandmother's pension played a role in paving the way of his adult journey.

All of us are capable, all we need is an opportunity.

Sello Hatang, CEO Nelson Mandela Foundation

Sello is one of the most humble and wonderful people I have ever worked with in any charitable foundation. He has taken the Nelson Mandela Foundation to international input and acceptance. This man has managed to steer the foundation from strength to strength.
