South African hostages hot commodity for terrorist groups, says ISS

South African citizens are ranked among the top 10 nationalities in the world that are targeted by major terrorist groups, such as Islamic State (IS), al-Qaeda, Boko Haram, alShabaab and pirates.

This is according to research by the Institute For Security Studies (ISS).

At least 50 South Africans have been killed or injured by terrorists since 2010.

Some places where South Africans have been kidnapped:

  • Mali
  • Yemen
  • Somalia
  • Nigeria

ISS's Martin Ewi says terrorist groups target countries that they believe will pay huge amounts of ransom to support their operations.

He explains that South Africa is regarded as the richest country on the continent.

The list is growing, wherever you find these religious fundamentalist groups.

Martin Ewi, Senior Researcher at Institute For Security Studies

According to Ewi, most South Africans are kidnapped in other countries while travelling for work purposes.

He advises that the South African government has taken a stance not to negotiate with terrorist groups.
