Jan Rodrigues: I did not assault Ahmed Timol

The inquest into anti-apartheid activist Ahmed Timol's death has entered its 13th day.

EWN senior reporter, Barry Bateman was at the High Court in Pretoria where the inquest was heard. Bateman says it was Timol's family who rejected the original inquest into the anti-apartheid activists death in 1972 and have since been trying to unearth the real version and evidence of events.

Bateman says expert evidence has been presented in the court this week. He adds that the man who helped establish the Scorpions in South Africa also took to the stand.

Bateman goes on to say that the original investigation into the death of Timol was a shoddy job and a cover-up for the police involved.

We've had two former security branch police officers in the dock this week, Neville Els and Jan Rodrigues.

Bateman reports that Rodrigues was warned that he is going to face prosecution should he be found guilty of any involvement in Timol's death.

Rodrigues says when he saw Timol in the afternoon, he saw no visible injuries on him.

If you go and have a look at the pathologists report, for example, it shows that Timol had significant, pre-fall injuries to his body, including bruising to face and possibly a broken jaw reports Bateman.

Bateman explains that Rodrigues and all police officers have voluntarily declared in their statements "I did not assault Ahmed Timol".
