Activists want bail denied for 53-year-old man accused of raping girl (6)

Community activists in Bonteheuwel have called for bail to be opposed for a 53-year-old man accused of raping a six-year-old child.

They 're shocked and frustrated. They're saying that they don't want this man back in the community, given the fact that the girl's family is still on his property.

The man allegedly sexually assaulted the child in his house, where the victim and her mother live in a backyard dwelling, reports EWN's Shamiela Fisher.

The 53-year-old man was the landlord. The six-year-old girl and her mother live in a backyard dwelling on his property.

The mother allegedly sent her child into the main house to fetch water on Friday, then became concerned when she didn't come back.

It's understood the mother found her daughter in the bathroom with the man allegedly hiding behind the door.

The woman alerted authorities and it's alleged that the suspect bribed the child with R5 not to talk about the incident.

The family is currently undergoing counseling provided by the Western Cape Social Development Department.

The matter has been postponed until August 28 for a formal bail application.
