MTN lost 14.3% of its Nigerian subscribers in six months.
The drop follows a reassessment of subscriber definitions due to new rules requiring connections to take place in permanent structures.
MTN now has 53.1 million users in that country.
Nevertheless, revenues in Nigeria is up by 10.8% due to strong growth in data consumption.
MTN returned to profitability during the first half of 2017.
Headline earnings came in at R3.9 billion.
This compares with a loss of R4.9 billion a year earlier.
