Madonsela lambastes Hawks, Parliament for inaction over #GuptaLeaks

Former Public Protector Thuli Madonsela says those who have been mentioned in the leaked Gupta emails need to be held to account for the role they played in the capture of the state.

The Gupta leaks have provided more evidence of a relationship with many people in government and the Gupta family.

Advocate Thuli Madonsela, Former Public Protector

She says the leaked emails have revealed even more allegations since her State Of Capture report last year.

Madonsela advises that more dubious financial transactions have been revealed in the Gupta Leaks, providing tangible evidence to allegations made in her report.

She argues that elements of the state appear to have been hijacked and re-purposed, primarily in state-owned enterprises (SOEs).

According to Madonsela, there has been no moment of accountability since the emails were exposed.

She slammed the Hawks for not taking action to investigate the emails, but instead investigating whistleblowers of corruption.

Institutions such as the Hawks had an opportunity to investigate after the Public Protector report and now after these emails came out.

Advocate Thuli Madonsela, Former Public Protector

We are not seeing action from the Hawks, but we do see action from them against those who are seen to be standing in the way of looting.

She expected that Parliament would have asked all those implicated to provide sworn affidavit indicating the extent of truth in the emails.

Madonsela proposes that Parliament should ask government officials to provide email data over the period that the Gupta leaks span.

I've been shocked about the lack of accountability since the emails were made public.

Advocate Thuli Madonsela, Former Public Protector

These emails provide prima facie evidence. All that's needed is for the people who are implicated to say yes and no. When they say no, they must provide their own records.
