Thriving as a woman in a male dominated trade

The University of Cape Town on Tuesday appointed Professor Alison Lewis as Dean of the Faculty of Engineering and the Built Environment. She is the first female to receive such an appointment which she will take up as of 1 June.

Professor Lewis had previously served as a senior lecturer, Head of the Department of Chemical Engineering and as Professor of Chemical Engineering.

CapeTalk presenter Pippa Hudson spoke to Professor Lewis about her appointment.

I think there are fantastic opportunities for women in the Engineering and the Built Environment faculty and I am hoping we're going to see many more women in the faculty.

According to Prof Lewis, only about 28 percent of all students - from undergraduates to doctoral level - are females. She hopes this number will continue to increase.

Lewis said she thinks the working environment is changing and there is an acknowledgement that women can also add to the workplace.
