The Competition Commission charged furniture removal company Stuttaford Van Lines with more than 500 counts of collusive tendering, which relates relates to hundreds of government tenders issued for furniture transportation.
Competition Commissioner, Thembinkosi Bonakele, says they started investigating Stuttaford after receiving damning evidence against the company.
We are asking the tribunal to impose a 10% penalty on each of those contraventions.— Thembinkosi Bonakele, Competition Commission Commissioner
We are using this as an example of how the 10% can deter people from engaging in collusion.— Thembinkosi Bonakele, Competition Commission Commissioner
The Competition Commission found that Stuttaford organised cover prices and when submitting quotes, they would also organise other quotes that they pretended to be from a different company.
According to Bonakele, the company would also submit quotes even in tenders they did not want, just to give an impression that they had a competitive quoting system.
