Mbete's #SecretBallot move is bad for SAs democracy - political analyst

National Assembly Speaker, Baleka Mbete, on Monday afternoon announced that she would allow members of parliament to vote in a secret ballot in the motion of no confidence vote against President Jacob Zuma on Tuesday, 8 August.

Political Analyst, Professor Steven Friedman says Mbete's move is bad for South Africa's democracy but a smarter move for the African National Congress (ANC) strategy. Friedman adds that anyone elected to public office is accountable to the people who elected them.

And the people who elected them have an absolutely unbreakable right to know what is done in their name and to decide whether they find it acceptable or not.

Professor Steven Friedman, political analyst

Friedman explains that he doesn't know any other democracy in the world where a secret vote by members of parliament is considered a victory for democracy.

Take a listen:

Prof. Lesiba Teffo, Political Analyst tells CapeTalk's John Maytham that maybe the elders prevailed on Mbete that there are greater benefits in going with a secret ballot in the motion of no confidence vote because that's what people on the ground are asking for.

I think the decision will work for the ANC going forward.

Prof. Lesiba Teffo, Political Analyst

I think the vote might go against President Zuma on Tuesday, says Teffo.
