Why avo prices keep soaring

South Africans are complaining as the price of avocado keeps soaring, with one fruit costing anything between R7 and R16.

SA Avocado Growers' Association CEO, Derek Donkin, has attributed the price increase to a number of factors, saying demand has doubled in the past three years.

He says there was also a production shortage caused by the country's recent drought.

People are realising it's a healthy fruit, it's versatile and it is delicious to eat.

Derek Donkin, SA Avocado Growers' Association CEO

Donkin says about 90% of the production of avocados is consumed in South Africa. He says they only start importing avocados at the end of the season, between November and February, to supply high-end retailers like Woolworths.

He says they don't have access to markets like China, where demand has also grown substantially, but he is hoping that exports will begin in the next few years.

It is largely local production that South Africans are consuming.
