50 (ANC) votes needed to oust Zuma - Dali Mpofu

The South African Communist Party (SACP) has reiterated it's position ahead of a motion of no confidence in President Jacob Zuma and insists he must step down.

The party's deputy general secretary Solly Mapaila says the motion is an opportunity for the African National Congress to commit itself for renewal and deal with corruption.

Mapaila says appropriate measures should have been taken much earlier.

I hope our comrades in parliament can exercise their consciousness as revolutionaries who have joined the movement voluntarily based on its ethos and values and that they will act accordingly when the motion comes.

Solly Mapaila, Deputy Secretary General of the SACP

Our comrades as members of the ANC, in their own right must do the right thing and free South Africa from the rot of corruption and state capture which we feel President Zuma is at the core centre of.

What are the odds of removing Zuma?

Here are the numbers...

51% of the votes is required in both cases for the motion to carry - 201 votes of the total 400.

400 MPs sit in the National Assembly in total

249 are ANC MPs

151 are MPs from all the opposition parties

37 MPs from parties other than the DA and EFF will need to support the motion.

Of the 249 ANC MPs, at least 50 will have to vote "yes" to remove Zuma.

Asked if this is a feasible prospect, the Economic Freedom Fighter's, Dali Mpofu, says it is likely.

The ANC's position has been look it doesn't matter whether it is open or secret because our members are so disciplined the result will be the same, anyone who believes that needs their head to be examined. The reason why there has been resistance to the secret ballot s because they new that there is a possibility.

Dali Mpofu, EFF national chairperson

He says if the SACP rallies in favor of the motion, this will account for half of the votes needed from the ANC camp.

And then of course you have got the people who have said they will vote for the motion, Derek Hanekom, Pravin, Makosi, and so on. That already takes the number up to about 30 something.

Dali Mpofu, EFF national chairperson

That is very doable in a group of 250 people who are not NEC members, human beings who come from all over who under the protection of the secret ballot must just do what is needed.
