The fight for women's rights should be a day-to-day commitment - expert
Director of the Centre for Constitutional Rights, Phephelapi Dube, says although Women's Day is celebrated on the 9th of August every year, there is a sense of fatigue where women ask themselves if it's still worth it.
We talk about women's rights and we acknowledge the importance of the role women play in society but doesn't seem to be a meaningful change in terms of security and freedom from violence.Phephelapi Dube, Director of the Centre for Constitutional Rights
She says it is not enough that this day is used to highlight some of the shortcomings and the constitutional promises made to women in South Africa.
There should be a day to day commitment until change is realised, she says.
It should not be just a commitment on paper and words. We have to see tangible difference to the lives of South African women.Phephelapi Dube, Director of the Centre for Constitutional Rights
Dube spoke about the recent assault of three women, allegedly by the Deputy Minister of Higher Education Mduduzi Manana and the fact that till now there hasn't be any prosecution against him.
She says it is disheartening that Manana was seen walking freely at Parliament during the motion of no confidence against the President.
It is important for organs of state to deal decisively with these kinds of incidences.Phephelapi Dube, Director of the Centre for Constitutional Rights
There are too many instances where police simply don't respond to allegations of violence against women.Phephelapi Dube, Director of the Centre for Constitutional Rights
