Manana made his first appearance in court on Thursday after admitting to assaulting Mandisa Duma at a nightclub at the weekend.

Deputy Higher Education Minister Mduduzi Manana has been granted R5 000 bail by the Randburg Magistrates Court.

The deputy minister made his first appearance in court on Thursday after admitting to assaulting Mandisa Duma at a Johannesburg nightclub at the weekend.

It's understood that Manana assaulted the woman after she apparently called him gay during an argument.

Manana faces two counts of assault, with intent to cause grievous bodily harm.

The deputy minister arrived at the Randburg Magistrates Court via a back door and was escorted by court officials, raising questions about whether he has received preferential treatment.

In a statement released on Monday, Manana said he apologised unreservedly to Duma, her family and all South Africans for the incident.

NPA officials says they did not oppose bail because Manana has no pending cases against him, despite claims about a previous case opened against him.

His case has been postponed until 13 September.

Take a listen to the EWN update:

At the same time, attorney Tyrone Maseko says Manana bail amount is made on the basis of several considerations.

He also explained the gravity of Manana's charges.
