Analyst: Action against rogue ANC MPs will deepen divisions

President Jacob Zuma will have to act 'clandestinely' toward those believed to have voted with opposition parties in Tuesday's motion of no confidence, political analyst Karima Brown says.

African National Congress (ANC) Treasurer-General Zweli Mkhize on Thursday said MPs who defied the party should, in principle, face disciplinary action.

Mkhize was speaking on the sidelines of a lecture at Tshwane University of Technology's Soshanguve campus.

The motion, carried out by secret ballot, narrowly failed with around 35 ANC MPs believed to have voted in favour of removing Zuma.

Brown says any action taken against ANC MPs will in fact deepen divisions and call the legitimacy of a secret vote into question.

Any action against them will, in fact, just deepen those divisions. It will go nowhere to try and get unity

Karima Brown, political analyst

The other reason that they can't act against these people is that the vote is supposed to be secret and if there are any suggestions that they know who voted in a particular way, then the entire process is called into question.

Karima Brown, political analyst

The president himself is going to have to act clandestinely against those who he believes have betrayed him.

Meanwhile, opposition parties have rejected a bid by the Democratic Alliance (DA) to dissolve Parliament.
