How to cut your living expenses by half (and still eat well!)

In February this year Justin Bonello set out to halve his cost of living in the space of just three months. Now his challenge has ended and he shared the outcomes of his challenge with Cape Talk's Pippa Hudson.

Motivated by reducing his impact on the world, Bonello's departure point related to what he works with most - food. The fact that a startling 40 percent of food from an average family ends up in the bin saw him set his first task - planting his own vegetable garden.

In the 20 minute interview he shared some of the critical secrets to his success, including:

  • Growing his own vegetables
  • Cutting his electricity bill from R2000 to R500
  • Doubling his water bill (but re-used it in his garden)
  • Building a greenhouse
  • Harvesting rainwater
  • Doing an eco-audit of his house
