#CountryDuty shows power of hashtag and social media activism

The effective use of #CountryDuty on Twitter, to get swift action in a school assault case, has demonstrated the power of hashtag activism.

Last week, corporate-law attorney and Twitter activist Tumi Sole posted a video of KwaZulu-Natal (KZN) schoolgirl being assaulted.

The viral video, shared using the #CountryDuty hashtag, got the police and education authorities to take action.

Sole says that he shared the video in the hopes that something would be done by officials.

Social media specialist Jodene Shaer adds that online platforms can be used for good, to create awareness using the power of the hashtag.

She says that the #CountryDuty hashtag is being used to create a sense of community.
