Management jobs remain skewed in favour of men - SAIRR

The South African Institute of Race Relations (IRR) has released statistics reflecting on the status of women in the country.

SAIRR's August Fast Facts reveal a mixed bag of successes and failures for the women of South Africa.

  • Women in South Africa are expected to live longer than men
  • Limpopo, Eastern Cape and KwaZulu Natal have the highest proportion of female-headed houses
  • The female labour market participation rate is nearly 18% lower than the male labour market participation rate
  • Employment in management remains skewed in favour of men (only 21.4% cent of females holding positions in top management)

The statistics include life expectancy, education, politics and crime stats about women in South Africa.

Involvement in the labour market participation rate is low, despite the positive picture that we have in the education system.

Unathi Matwasa, researcher at the South African Institute of Race Relations

Despite the fact that women are doing well in the education system, labour market participation remains low. Women are still excluded in the economy in South Africa.
