Are diplomats and politicans above the law?

CapeTalk/702's listeners weigh in on what action South Africa should take against famous people, and politicians in particular, who get involved in criminal acts.

Grace Mugabe allegedly assaulted a 20-year-old South African woman on Sunday and Deputy Minister of Higher Education, Mduduzi Manana paid R5000 bail for also allegedly assaulting a woman.

Why are these renowned figures getting special treatment when they have clearly committed crimes ask listeners?

Grace Mugabe, if she is involved in an act of criminality is South Africa, immunity falls away - that's in terms of international law.

Monwabisi, Midrand

As long as you entered the country using a diplomatic passport, even if you break the law, you get immunity until the South African government decides to revoke the immunity.

Nandi, caller

I am concerned that the law doesn't apply to these diplomats, this is very concerning, what if she was caught with illegal substances.

Nqobile, Auckland Park

Minister Manana really needs to pay a fine and quit his position but jail that is not going to happen...

David, Midrand
