#Charlottesville: 'US and other countries must address difficult histories'

Harvard executive Obenewa Amponsah says the United States (US) and many other countries around the world need to address their difficult histories, and not wish them away.

We have to work the legacies of these histories away on a daily basis.

Obenewa Amponsah, Harvard African Studies Centre's executive director

This comes amid violent clashes in Charlottesville, Virginia, between white nationalists and counter-protesters.

Amponsah says the current tension in the US could be seen as a backlash to Barack Obama's presidency.

With the election of a black man as president, there is this backlash against people of colour in the US.

Obenewa Amponsah, Harvard African Studies Centre's executive director

She has slammed President Donald Trump for waiting more than 48 hours before condemning white supremacy and racism.

She says that conversations about the US being a post-racial society have been premature.
